    WE
    ARE
    CLEARING OUT OUR ARCHIVES!
A superb and rare photo of the famous
Triumph Gyronaut X-1 that broke the land speed record in 1966 and set a new world record speed of
    245.66 mph
    (393,056 km/hr)!
Bob Leppan in the Triumph Gyronaut X-1 world record breaker. It was powered by 2 superbly tuned Triumph Bonneville engines. It set in 1966 at the Bonneville Salt Flats a new world speed record of
    245.667 mph
(395.36 km/hr)!! The photograph was taken during the British Earls Court Motorcycle Show of 1966.
After the record, the record team was invited by Triumph’s Edward Turner to come to the Meriden Triumph factory, with the record streamliner, which was put on display during the
    1966 Earls Court
motorcycle show where it drew massive crowds.
This impressive machine was designed by Alex Tremulis, Bob Leppan and Jim Bruflodt. It featured two Triumph pre-unit TR6 twin engines that were mounted in a slim 4130 chrome moly chassis which was tucked in a well engineered slim, aerodynamic fiber glass body that was 15ft
    8”
    long and
    24.5”
    wide and
    4 square feet
of frontal area. It was made of three parts and partly dubbed as a monocoque. It featured a flexible nose that could be trimmed for the attempt and it also featured a dorsal stabilizing fin at the back of the cigar. That was a novelty at the time. Interesting was its center hub steering, made from an old Triumph Sprung Hub…
The two pre unit TR 6 engine s were methanol powered. They still had the stock capacity of 641cc. Four Amal 1-1/8” 289 carburettors were mounted. Size of the intake valves was 1-7/8”, size of the exhaust valves was 1-1/2”. Compression ratio was 12 : 1.
Edward Turner ‘s Triumph standing twin engines were and are a work of art. It is incredible that they were able to propel the Gyronaut X-1 to a truly extraordinary high speed of
    245.66 mph
    (393,056 km/hr)! Think of it !
