Description
A superb and rare photo of the1912
Rudge 499cc T.T. Roadster Model
with the Italian racing ace and Italian National Champion
Ernesto Vailati
.
The photo was taken shortly after Vailati won the prestigious
Italian National Championship roadracing
with the photographed Rudge TT Roadster in
1
912
.
It is a great looking photo that really captures the spirit of 1910s racing.
The Rudge is covered in road dust, but look how oil-tight-dry that magnificent engine is!
Rudge motorcycles were produced from 1911 to 1946. The firm was known for its innovations in engine and transmission design, and its racing successes. Their sales motto was "Rudge it, do not trudge it."
Selling re-badged
Werners
in 1909, the company went on to produce their first motorcycle in 1911.
It had a vertically positioned, 499cc single cylinder F-head engine.
The inlet valve was an overhead valve, the exhaust valve was a sidevalve.
Its sport version, the
T.T. Roadster
, immediately became very succesful in racing.
One of the most famous victories was that of
Ernesto Vailati
in
1912
, when he clinched the
Italian Championship
with his
Rudge TT Roadster
.
On the photograph that the winner of this auction will receive, we see
Ernesto
Vailati
sitting on his Italian Championship winning Rudge, shortly after he was declared the Champion.
It is a great historic photo!
The year 1912 was the same year that the 499 cc
Rudge
Multi
was released, using variable groove-depth pulleys to gain 21 forward ratios, and a top gear as high as 2.75:1.
In
1913 a
750 cc Multi was released. In
1914, a
Multi won the Isle of Man T.T.
Throughout its history Rudge models could be seen on circuits all over the world, obtaining some magnificent results in famous races.
The photograph of Vailati on his TT Roadster is up until the day of today a great wittness of that!
This photo reflects a very interesting and historic non period piece of motorcycling and Rudge history. Therefore it is printed in a nice large format of ca. 8" x 10" (ca. 20 x
25 cm
).
