If you ever have the opportunity to share magic in
Japan
(or with a Japanese magician) you will be amazed at just how different western and eastern styles of magic really are. If I had to describe Japanese magic in one word, it would be “topological.” Their magic often involves changing the nature of something, or causing some part of something to be altered. Their magic is often beautiful, and is performed in a slow and elegant manner.
The problem is there are very few places to learn Japanese magic. Fortunately, you’re looking at perhaps the best resource to do so. This book is a hidden gem, and a lovely addition to your library. You’ll find a stunning wine glass production, several stage effects, and a host of beautiful close-up effects. I would consider this collection less “session” stuff and more performance oriented, which is a high compliment. If you don’t yet have this book, you can bet it will be a different kind of magic book.
New Magic of Japan is the English-language version of the original Japanese book New Generation Plus Alpha. It contains many card tricks and some magic of other kinds as well. It was not translated, but rewritten from the Japanese original by Phil Goldstein and Richard Kaufman. The trick by Dr.
Sawa
was added for the English language version and did not appear in the original.
