500cc Moto Guzzi Dondolino.
This famous bike
and the equally famous
Bruno Francisi
, would win a stage of the legendary
1952
edition of the
Milano -
Taranto
roadrace
in
Italy
. He would win the race!
The extremely heavy Milano-Taranto (or MiTa) roadrace ran from the North to the South of Italy, a length of circa
800 miles
(1,300 km’s), starting was at
midnight
in the city of
Milan
, the finish at the city of
Taranto
. The riders had to cross mountain passes, coastal roads, short curves, long curves, and road surfaces that were barely rideable at stretches.
Duilio Agostini won the race with his factory Moto Guzzi Dondolino. He needed a time of 12.33’13”, good for an average speed of
70.2 mph
(112,317 km/hr)! He started in the competition class, and was the fastest overall in all classes as well. He finished 16 minutes before the number two, Antonio Ronchei on a Gilera 500. Francisi won the 1951 edition of Milan Taranto as well on a Guzzi Dondolino. In 1955 he won the race again, this time on a Gilera 500cc four cylinder works racer.
